Underwater Museum in Cancun

Have you ever heard about the underwater museum? How would you feel diving inside the water and observing some beautiful sculptures? Yeah you can actually see sculptures underwater, which are made up of pH-neutral concrete to attract algae and to start a marine life, by this it is said it will boost new marine life on sculptures. Witness these brilliant concept of creating new life, turn into reality at Cancun, in Caribbean waters but after 2011. Side by side, you can even enjoy the pristine, blue water with dazzling white sand and hot Mexican sun! The officials have also taken care of not harming existing corals and reefs present in nearby shores.

The work of settling down the sculptures is in progress and till now only four sculptures are settled down and there are four hundred more sculptures to go down. as the coral and reefs aren’t that far away from the sculptures so being a snorkeling and diving spots, many divers has got glimpse of this magnificent sculptures. The museum is said to be aiming tourists from all over the world and also creating something unique!

What I mean by unique is that it’s a step towards creating new marine life and giving a boost local ecosystem as coral reefs present at Quintana Roo’s West Coast National Park have suffered due to recent hurricanes and suffering more because of the inexperienced divers, who while diving into the waters walk on corals and break them through their fins or oxygen tank. The initiative behind such project is also for the reason that hurricanes waves get dissipated in these reefs so creating more reefs will protect property and human lives.

As creating new life is not a simple task and needs time. Artist Jason deCaires Taylor who is in charge in creating these sculptures have made sure the elements used in these sculptures are eco-friendly and will sure attract green algae to start off. Being tourists’ destination for a decade, Cancun has suffered due to recession and bad publicity of swine flu. This plan is hoping to tourists attraction again.

You might know about the 1997, cruise ship mishap happened at Punta Cancun that destroyed around five hundred square meters of coral and reefs, but the corals of that area are in best condition than before. The idea of the sub merging artificial thing to create new marine life is not new in Mexico waters as you can check out Sac Bajo, which is created by human efforts in 2005. It’s very beautiful to dive into around one hundred and ten domes and concrete structures were sub merged and now one of the favorite diving spot for the tourists.

The idea still has got my attention at least and being to the Sac Bajo, I can’t wait to see this museum to start in 2011. its very positive approach towards making the world to change and take step to bring change so our children wouldn’t miss out to see these some exotic being of underwater.

“Conservationists need to find different ways of engaging with the world. Artists should get involved in environmental matters so it is not just scientists trying to get the message out there.”

We couldn’t agree more and look forward to reporting on the museum’s progress soon.

Cancun underwater museum is a series of sculptures by Jason DeCaires Taylor placed underwater off the coast of Isla de Mujeres and Cancún, Mexico.

The project began in November 2009 with placement of 100 statues in shallow waters of the Cancún National Marine Park which had been previously damaged by storms.

Sculptures are created with PH-Neutral concrete and are based on members of the local community.

The artist planned the sculptures are artificial reefs with fire coral planted in initial sculptures. A total of 400 sculptures is planned to be installed by the end of 2010.

The idea is for the sculptures – all made of pH-neutral concrete – to attract algae and marine life and therefore soon take on a life of their own, giving the local ecosystem a boost.

The existing coral reef in Quintana Roo’s West Coast National Park where the museum will be situated has suffered damage from recent hurricanes and human activity:

Inexperienced divers, for example, who break corals by walking on them or swimming too close to them and accidentally hitting them with a fin or oxygen tank.

What an awesome place with lots of stuff to play around and places to see. I love the pics, the blue sea is unbelieveable in real life and the blue sky makes it beautiful.

Last time I went to Cancun I loved it and wanted to let you know that I as well loved it out there. One of the really great things is that Cancun is nice and compressed in size and it is easy to get around with the busses and stuff.
